1 O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. 1 hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kahi-aa jaa-ee. By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described.

Hukmee hovan jee-a hukam milai vadi-aa-ee. By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained. Hukmee u tam neech hukam li kh du kh su kh paa-ee-ah. By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained. Iknaa hukmee ba khsees ik hukmee sa daa bhavaa-ee-ah.

Some sing of knowledge obtained of Him, through difficult philosophical studies. Gaavai ko saaj karay tan khayh. Some sing that He fashions the body, and then again reduces it to dust. Gaavai ko jee-a lai fir dayh.

Some sing that He takes life away, and then again restores it. Gaavai ko jaapai disai door. Some sing that He seems so very far away.

1. I love this app as it is all continuous, some of the other apps u have to keep pressing next to get to the chapter, so if u don’t have a signal it can take a few minutes, which then stops the flow of your prayer. I use to try and read the Japji sahib every morning before going to work, but as life is so busy, always rushing, did nt always get the time.

Then a friend at work told me her mom gets it on her phone. So I googled it, and after going through several different apps I came across this one, which is exactly what I was looking for. I have saved it on my phone.

I have a 40 min bus ride to work, so now I can read the japji sahib on the bus every morning without any interruption or rushing. Thank you so much for these translations- i have read many translations that i suspect were quite literal and did not really make sense. I would have to try to figure out if the translation was supposed to be a metaphor as it did not make sense in English, or did not feel like a prayer. This is the first translation that i have read which make sense and feel like i have understood the original meaning of the prayer.

I cannot thank you enough. As a child in the UK it was always hard whilst growing up to find someone who would pay enough attention to the inquisitive child who wanted to know what the words in the prayers meant. As i grew older these things became easier to find online and YouTube does have some good versions, but the read-alongs often do spoil the flow and its always better to spend more/less time on the sections you need to understand as appropriate for you- i found many YouTube translations too fast to understand the meaning properly- simply reading words does not mean understanding.

Now as an adult, who has spend many years searching for the answers i have finally found something that resonates with me. Thank you for making it easier to open my eyes to the meanings of the prayers i have always been drawn to.
